Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE, December 13th, 2024

What a crazy topsy-turvy day.

Decided to drive to the northernmost part of the UAE today to beautiful Sha’am and Al-Jeer in Ras Al-Khaimah and then I reached the security check point to enter Oman and the Musandam Peninsula. The plan was to buy a two-hour visa at the control point.

I passed no-man’s land into the point of no return and the Mitsubishi SUV shut down on me and blocked the access for everyone across the border – a total electrical system failure!

A patient policeman strolled over and removed a few bollards to allow border traffic to pass. I called the rental company and they called me back and told me I was at the border and it was not permitted. The GPS system had automatically shut my rental car down at the crossing point!

The rental company reset my system within five minutes and the old gal fired up and I did a U-turn in no-man’s land, thanking the now three police in the process.

It was then a leisurely run south along the coast to stop for a light lunch and catch up with Rob and Annabelle Poynton at their divine villa in Al-Hamra village.

We went for lunch in their golf buggy to the nearby club and then it was a one-hour run back to Ajman via Umm Al-Quwain to return the fully-functioning jalopy.
