US Road Trip 2024 – Day 9
Day 9: Casper to Keystone via Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore
Who said South Dakota was boring?
Rather than retrace my steps north for a short time on the 25, I headed east on the 25 through Douglas, before joining the 18 in Orin.
From there, the 18 took me northeast through Shawnee and Lusk in Wyoming and across the state line into South Dakota and the one-road town of Edgemont.
I joined the 89 north to Argyle, Pringle and crowded Custer for breakfast. It was then a long winding run on the 385 through Crazy Horse and the Black Hills to arrive at Keystone. Black Elk Peak (7244ft) is the highest mountain in the States to the east of the Rockies.
Obviously the highlights of the 280-mile day were the visits to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Crazy Horse Memorial and then on to a local gold mine that saw a boom here many years ago after the initial gold rush in Montana and Colorado.
